Introduction to Fibre Channel based: FCIP and iSCSI comparison

In addition to FCIP, another approach is iSCSI, this method is to convert the user's request SCSI code, and data encapsulation into IP packets for transmission within the internal Ethernet. In order to connect geographically dispersed SAN, FCIP protocol can only be used to connect Fibre Channel technology; comparison,, iSCSI can be run on existing Ethernet. SAN connection, such as FCIP and iSCSI through an agreement can be in the traditional data storage systems based on point to point connection, provide more performance, efficiency and fault tolerance and so on. Many vendors, including Cisco, Nortel Networks and Lucent has introduced FCIP-based products (such as switches and routers). Known as the Internet Fibre Channel Protocol (iFCP) hybrid technology, is a variant of FCIP protocols for Mobile IP network, using the iSCSI protocol to transmit the Fibre Channel data.
